The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has released a critical update following a successful meeting with the University Management regarding the new academic calendar and student financial welfare.
Relief for NELFUND Applicants
In a statement signed by the SUG President, Comr. Elijah Ekanem, the union confirmed that students who have applied for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) will be protected. Management has assured that eligible students will be permitted to use the loan to settle their school fees for the current session once the disbursement is finalized.
Crucially, the university maintains that no student should be disadvantaged or penalized due to technical delays in the loan approval or disbursement process.
No Need to Defer Studies
Addressing concerns over financial constraints, the University Management reiterated its stance against the suspension of studies for financial reasons. Students are strongly advised NOT to withdraw, defer, or suspend their academic activities because of challenges related to school fees or the loan process.
Call to Action for Students
The SUG leadership is encouraging all eligible students who have not yet applied for the NELFUND loan to do so immediately. The loan is designed to ensure financial continuity and support academic pursuits without the immediate pressure of out-of-pocket payments.
Improving Administrative Processes
Acknowledging past hurdles, the Management stated that lessons from previous sessions have been noted. New administrative measures are being implemented to prevent payment conflicts and ensure a smoother experience for the student body.

President Ekanem urged the student community to remain calm, focused, and patient as these financial processes are finalized. He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to actively engaging with stakeholders to safeguard student interests.
”The SUG will continue to actively engage Management and relevant stakeholders to safeguard the welfare and academic interests of all students,” the statement concluded.
