The Students’ Union Government (S.U.G.) of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic has officially notified the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of an intended protest following the non-disbursement of approved Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) payments.
In a formal letter dated January 30, 2026, signed by the S.U.G. President, Comrade Wisdom Udoimuk, the union expressed deep frustration over the gridlock preventing students from accessing their interest-free educational loans.
The union highlighted that while a significant number of applications from Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic were duly approved by NELFUND, the funds have remained out of reach for the beneficiaries.
According to the statement, the delay stems from a reported investigation by the ICPC into the institution. The students were informed that payments could not be processed because the school is currently under commission scrutiny.
Verification Efforts: The Student Affairs Unit has reportedly worked to trace and verify the details of students who had temporarily disengaged from the institution before the approval stage to ensure they are eligible for their payments.
Growing Agitation: The delay has led to “growing agitation” among the student body, resulting in direct confrontations between affected students and school authorities.
Loan vs. Grant: The union emphasized that these funds are loans, not grants. They argued that any directive to move these specific funds into the Treasury Single Account (TSA) would “negate the very purpose” of the student loan scheme.
The letter serves as a formal “Request Letter/Notice of Intended Protest,” signaling that the student body is prepared to take further action if the bottleneck is not resolved and their approved funds released.
The S.U.G. leadership, including Vice President Onyinyechi Okorie and Secretary Etima Joseph, remains adamant that the students should not be collateral damage in ongoing administrative investigations
