University of Port Harcourt announces 208th Inaugural Lecture

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill, on behalf of the Senate, staff, and students of the institution, has formally invited members of the academic community and the general public to the Two Hundred and Eight (208th) Inaugural Lecture of the University.

Inaugural lectures are important academic traditions in universities where newly appointed professors publicly present their research achievements, academic journey, and contributions to knowledge in their field of specialization. The upcoming lecture at the University of Port Harcourt is expected to highlight innovative ideas and research developments in engineering and sustainable technology.

Topic of the Lecture

The lecture will focus on the topic: “The Tonic for Emerging Sustainable Technologies.”

The theme is expected to explore the strategies, innovations, and technological advancements required to develop sustainable technologies that can address modern industrial and environmental challenges.

Guest Lecturer

The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Engr. Prof. Tobinson Alasin Briggs, a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Port Harcourt.

Professor Briggs holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) and Master of Engineering (M.Eng) from the University of Port Harcourt, a Postgraduate Certificate from Newcastle, and a PhD from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also a member of several professional engineering bodies including MNSE, COREN, and MIISE.

Date, Time and Venue

The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 12th March 2026 at 3:00 PM prompt.

The venue for the lecture is the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Hall, University Park, University of Port Harcourt.

Guests are advised to be seated by 2:30 PM ahead of the commencement of the lecture.
